Walkabout and Adventuring, hopefully the last one of 2009 27 June 2009

Filed under: Baltimore, beagles — Amber @ 12:09 am

Heading for a weekend at Mom’s house.  It was well deserved consider they tried to run away just a few days before.

Nick, our dogwalker, called us to say that when he got to the house on Tuesday afternoon that both Huck and Daisy were outside and that Huck was laying on the ground outside not moving.  We were so worried- we rushed home to find that they had scratched the screen window out and jumped the 8 foot drop out the window.  Daisy was just fine but Huck had the wind knocked out of him.  We weren’t sure if there was any serious damage or not so we had to take him to the vet.  When we got to the house he was walking around ok but was still really upset.  The vet said he was just fine and maybe a bit of the drama-queen.

IMG_2637 by you.

He spent the next few days whining for attention- but seemed to be just fine.

IMG_2638 by you.

So we headed up to Mom’s for the weekend after a little meditation in the car.

IMG_2642 by you.

He loves riding shotgun in the car.

Next:  Sunday morning.  Mom and I wake up early Sunday morning to bake bread (mostly her) and to pick raspberries.  After a cup of hot coffee, we headed out to the raspberry patch.   The beagles came outside with us and hung out.  We kept an eye on them- they lately had been really really good about sticking close to home when they weren’t on the leash up at mom’s house, just hanging out in the sun and not wondering too far off.  After about an hour or so of raspberry picking we were getting into the middle of the patch and Mom decided to put the babies in the house so that we didn’t have to keep such a close eye on them.

Another hour of picking raspberries and we head back into the house for breakfast.  But where are the dogs?

The little bastards got out the back door- through the screen door- and made off like bandits!!!!  And JUST after we were bragging on them for being so good lately.

Add three hours of searching the yard, and all the roads nearby, and the woods, and the cow pastures, and the ditches and everywhere we could imagine- driving and drivng and driving. Three hours.

And then… as I was driving out of Craigtown Market and heading down the road I see Huck and Daisy coming out of one section of woods and heading across the road into another patch of woods.  I pulled over and called to them both and they ran happily to me- Look!  We went Adventuring! We played in the woods!  We are hungry- can you feed us now? They had crossed a major road with fast moving cars and spent the last few exploring the woods and picking up no less than 8 ticks each and all kinds of smells.

I put the beagles in the car- so happy that they had at least stuck together and that I hadn’t given up on them- called James (in KY visiting his parents) to tell him I had found our babies finally- and took them home for a hose bath.

Just after we got back to the house- dirty dirty smelly dogs.

Later that afternoon, we left Mom’s and headed to the airport to pick up James.  Huck wasn’t feeling all that well- he was sleeping a lot and seemed really sore and tired.

june 21 (129) by you.

He slept the whole way down to the airport…

june 21 (131) by you.

while Daisy freaked out in the backseat (as usual).

After a few days, turns out he was just fine.  Maybe just getting old, maybe got into something while he was Adventuring on his 2009 Walkabout, maybe just is a drama queen.

Baltimore Ten Miler Runners 26 June 2009

I watched Badass Kari BB run the Baltimore Ten Miler last weekend.

I got to Druid Hill Lake at 730 to watch the kick off.  I cheered the first few hundred runners (and Kari) before the thundercloud burst.  I made it back to the car, soaking wet, and raced over to the halfway point to cheer from there.

This is somewhere around mile 5.5. It is really hard to find one single runner among thousands when they all sorta look the same.

IMGP2788 by you.

They look tired as they head back up the hill that is 33rd.

IMGP2789 by you.

You don’t really notice the hill when you’re driving down this road- but that hill is serious!

IMGP2790 by you.

This guy must have thought I worked for the paper.   He was smiling just in caseI was going to publish his photo.  Which I guess I sorta did.

IMGP2792 by you.

This poor girl looks a bit more realistic.  Poor girl- you can do it!

IMGP2793 by you.

More serious runners making their way up the hill.  Where is Kari?  Did I miss her.  Let’s see…. 5.5 miles times 12 minute miles plus 7:30am means she should be arriving just about…

IMGP2794 by you.

NOW!!!!  Check out those guns!  Check out that smile!

IMGP2795 by you.

She stopped for a hug and I told her to keep running and I’d meet her at the finish line.   I packed up my stuff and drove back over to the lake.  She crossed the line a few minutes before I could find a parking spot and get my camera ready- so we did sorta stage this photo after she finished.

IMGP2805 by you.

IMGP2807 by you.

And in all the fun photo-taking we didn’t even notice this awesomely creepy guy checking Kari out!

Great Job Kari- I hope to join you next year!!!

Faidley’s, a family tradition. 14 June 2009

Filed under: Baltimore — Amber @ 10:18 pm

Another family visit… Aunt Patricia was in town, so this required.. nay DEMANDED a trip to Faidley’s seafood at Lexington Market.

IMG_0584

I may have mentioned this before- but I’m trying to learn to love seafood more.  I have never really loved it in the past but a few times over the last year I have had really really fresh seafood and absolutely loved it.   I went to St Simon Island, Georgia in October and had fresh oysters and shrimp right off the boat.  James and I went to Alaska in August and had delicious halibut at the Glacier Brewpub in Anchorage and went on to catch our own silver salmon in the Kenai River.

This weekend at Faidley’s I had raw clams for the first time.  The oysters were amazing and big and thick- but the wonderful firm meaty pink clams stole my heart.  I would sell out my own mother (sorry mom) to have another plate of clams in front of me right now.   I’d probably not do it for less than a full dozen though.  I DO have standards.

As we were eating, my Aunt Pat and my mom were telling stories about my grandpa Fred and how much he loved fresh clams and how he would gather and open and eat the clams while still standing in the water.  Those stories made these clams even better.  I am now in love with the fresh, salty, ocean taste of these creatures.   As we left and walked back to the car and drove home- I kept thinking- what is that wonderful taste in my mouth?  Ahhh…. CLAMS!!

After Mom and Aunt Pat and I polished off two plates, we went shopping for fixings for dinner.  When James got to the market, he and I went back for more clams and oysters (thanks to a magical $20 bill from Aunt Pat).  The nice boy behind the oyster bar was more than happy to help us out with fresh seafood and cold Natty Bohs.

I’m thinking about heading back over to the market tomorrow for more of them.

Mom and Aunt Patricia split a crabcake as well.  I had a bite- it was incredible but I still am not crazy about crabcakes and at 13$ each I didn’t want to take anything away from them.  Seriously though, these crabcakes are huge.

Camping close to home 12 June 2009

We spent last weekend camping as Susquehanna State Park.  We had a busy weekend planned- which is why we stuck close to home instead of heading out to Western Maryland. We didn’t get up there until late Friday night- as soon as we set up camp we went straight to sleep- though it was hard to ignore the Bubbas next door blasting Kid Rock.

The  next morning we went for a long run (I hate hills) and sat around and relaxed for the afternoon after James made some nice tasty hot dogs.

James washes fresh red leaf lettuce for our dinner just after I picked it from the garden.

I like to let it soak for a bit to get off the slugs- after about 15 minutes in the sink I can go rescue the slugs and set them free.

And the final result.  I admit- it doesn’t look fancy and I forgot to take the photo until I was half finished.   This is one of the special meals James makes for me:

lettuce
tuna
tomatoes
red onion
olives
chickpeas (or a scoop of hummus)
fresh garlic
feta
mayo
olive oil
lemon juice
balsamic vinegar
