My new parking garage makes me a little nervous- I think any garage that has the see thorough walls instead of the concrete ones are a little scary.  This one has a better view of the city.

Jew Bling?
Towson, Maryland

05 May 2008

I ran into an old friend and he was happy to show off his jew-bling. I have no idea what the back story is- but I enjoyed documenting it.  He helped me pick out some material at JoAnn Fabrics and cursed at me for remember that it was his birthday this week.  Happy birthday, old man!

I have a few photos of this guy circa 1993? Wow. I need to dig them up and share them with the world!

Then I ran to the grocery store for essentials- and realized the international nature of my essentials: pita, chorizo, jerk bbq, hot italian giardiniera, chipotle salsa and the very American V-8 and Cheez-its.

Put your face way up close to the screen and just look at the adorable that is this little boy. His sister and mom are pretty cute, too- but pay no attention to his crazy looking papa!

The funniest thing ever is that stage when kids sorta figure out what they are supposed to do in front of the camera but they don’t quite figure out exactly what type of face to make- so you end up with these scrunchy faces that make you melt.

Since we were outside- I didn’t want to turn the flash on but it was getting dark and my settings weren’t quite fast enough to keep the photo from blurring.  His eyes are in focus though- and I love his mug here.

I played with the photoshop blurring to try to make the background a little less obvious.

I have two lavender plants that made their way through the winter- one has flowered and one hasn’t. Are there girl and boy lavender plants? Flowering and non-flowering? Or did we just get a dud?

And my Lamb’s Ear is so beautiful.

And our blackberries and raspberries are ready to be planted- Mom gave us plenty of berries plants from her garden- and promised us they would give us fruit this year. Just two more months until the annual Fourth of July 80 Pounds of Blueberry Picking event!

Guess the awesomeness I saw tonight?

This American Life

Live in the movie theater.

On Thursday, May 1st acclaimed radio and television host Ira Glass will bring the wildly popular show This American Life to the big screen for a one-night only event. Glass debuts never-before-seen extraordinary, funny and true stories from everyday life, shows outtakes, and answers audience questions. This exclusive theatre event will be broadcast LIVE from New York via satellite to select movie theatres nationwide.

This one-night event features special guests and is presented in HD and Cinema Surround Sound.

It was so much fun- we loved it. It was a great two hours- and really fun to think that there were 300 theaters around the country watching the same thing. I wish movie theaters did more things like this- random broadcasts of live events.

The rain barrel we bought a few weeks ago hasn’t even been set up to collect the rain from the gutter and somehow we happened to place it in the place where the gutter actually overflows (note: need to fix that). It was raining all day Monday and by the time we got home from work, the barrel was overflowing. We might have to get a second barrel if they fill up this fast!

They Had A Dream Too
Dallas, Texas
Nikon Coolpix S3
27 April 2008

What fun are rules if you don’t get to break them occasionally? My sister took this photo because SHE WON AN EMMY and it finally arrived at her house. I think that deserves a little rule breaking. I just learned that there are all different Emmy awards- I mean- she wasn’t up against Katherine Heigl- but she did still win for best documentary in her regional area. Though she totally would have rocked the red carpet.

Through her involvement with the Texas Young Lawyers Association (even though they are kicking her out next year when she becomes eligible for the Texas Approaching Middle Ages Lawyers Association) last year she helped produce a documentary called They Had a Dream Too for use in Texas schools to teach about civil rights and get kids involved in community activism. She is so bad ass. Go look at the documentary, you can actually watch the whole 28 min video on the site.

They had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement is an 11th and 12th grade curriculum project. This project was produced by the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and made possible by a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation. They Had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement consists of a 28 minute film highlighting the achievement of a few of the thousands of young people who made a difference in the 1950s and 1960s when the struggle for civil rights reached its peak in the United States. The film includes interviews with people who as young adults helped changed their world. The film also contains a component that educates students about civil rights struggles that have occurred since the 1960s and challenges young people to become leaders today.

I did take a photo of the day today, but her photo was cooler. Emmy > Kittens.

We spent the first nice Saturday of the year first at the (cleaned-out) farmer’s market and then at the Lake in the City. James worked on Calculus while I knitted and made vitamin D. He kept complaining that he was getting burned and I kept calling him a crybaby. Actually- I think my words were ‘hush up, crybaby, or I’ll give you something to cry about’. A few hours later, I had to retract my previous bullshit statement and apologize as I rubbed cool creme on his poor crispy back. Bad wife.

Sheeba-dog, the first dog I ever really loved, has gone to the great doggie pet rest area in the sky this afternoon. She was the best friend Jenny and Thomas ever had and a total lover.

My favorite thing when I came to visit was giving her ice cubes- she knew the sound of the ice grinder in the fridge so well that when anyone went to the freezer to get ice she came running and asked nicely for one. And she totally was my cuddle dog at night when I came to visit- up until my last visit she always snuggled in bed with me.

And she LOVED to dress up for Halloween, just like Jenny and Thomas!

Jen and Thomas, in happier days…. Hopefully this is what the big doggie pet rest area in heaven looks like for Sheeba!

Almost three months later, I got this wonderful birthday present in the mail from by buddy Christie at the Cape! I’m surprised it took so long- but I don’t care because I just ran out of my favorite toothpaste ever and now I have four new tubes!!! I think it is strange that I can’t find toothpaste with eucalyptus here. I love love love eucalyptus- it is the smell of everything wonderful in the world.

PLUS I got five new skeins of cotton yarn in these beautiful colors AND a reminder that I need to buy tickets to fly to Cape Town. Ok, ok- seriously, I agree with you. Maybe Christmas this year? We can have a mini Cape Town Smith College reunion!

“a photo of your get-away-from-the-troubles-of-the-world place”

I have many places that make me feel like there are no troubles…

Kenya, safari, animals- but really just going to Africa. Every time I go- I come home and think- there is someone there living my life. I keep looking for something here- but what I really want is to take my little family and live there- South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia….

Home- just relaxing at home with friends and the dogs and the husband.

Warm and wonderful baths. When I lived in Northampton there was a place you could go and rent hot tubs by the hour- it wasn’t as creepy as it sounds. And now I dream about hot tubs.

New Orleans, or vacation in general.

Florida- sunshine, water, James, sand. I grew up in Florida and every time I go back I smell the water on the air and I feel happy.

A photo of your kitchen.
Heather took this photo last November when she came up for Zombie-fest 2007

You in your garden
This is the closest I have to me actually in the garden- from last year or the year before. My favorite is coming home, going directly through the back door, and picking fresh tomatoes and basil and eat them standing right there in the garden. Heaven.

The world watches: Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe talks to a farmer about his maize crop at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo on Friday. Zimbabwe is under international scrutiny over controversial elections held last month. (Alexander Joe, AFP)
South Africa Mail and Guardian

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Friday rejected foreign criticism of his country as international pressure mounted for him to stand down.

“Zimbabwe has a history and heritage and it will never be afraid. Zimbabwe is not for sale and Zimbabwe will never be a colony again,” Mugabe said at the opening of an international trade fair in the southern city of Bulawayo.

Mugabe also defended his government’s controversial farm seizures, a policy that began in 2000 and seen as marking the beginning of a decline in his 28-year rule over this fertile Southern African nation.

“Our country tried the willing-buyer, willing-seller method of land resettlement and it failed,” Mugabe said.

“It is our land, our treasure, our birthright,” he continued.

Has anyone offered to buy or colonize Zim lately?  It isn’t exactly a hot commodity?
Woci just pointed out that this is akin to Mugabe saying something like ‘I’m not on the market for dating anyone new right now’.  Really?
Who goes to an International Trade Fair in Zimbabwe these days?  Certainly not journalists- and certainly  not people who would criticize the land ‘resettlement’ program.

This section of Clifton Park has a sign that says No Ball Playing.  Every time I see it- I just want to go get a ball and play.  Or when I see signs that say Stay Off The Grass.  I can’t help it.  I hate parks that try to pretend to tell people what not to do in them… except for exposing yourself to children, I guess that is ok to prohibit.
