Upside Down Tomato Plants 17 June 2008
My Early Girl tomato plant- my first experiment in upside down tomato planting. I got the idea last year from Tad and Mel and this year wanted so badly to have a complete upside down tomato structure built. Unfortunately- I didn’t have enough time to build it so I decided to try with two plants this year and see how it goes before I build try it for realz next year.
First, I gathered all my tools.
Once I found a place for the plant to hang off the back deck- I pre-drilled the holes for the iron hanger and then successfully attached it in the exact spot (while taking photos)….

and hung my bucket in place

Now to prepare the Early Girl for transplanting.

The instructions I used said to use a coffee filter or paper towel around the neck of the plant to keep dirt from falling out so I made my Early Girl a little paper towel dress…

and fed her through the hole I had cut in the bottom of my plastic tub.

Once upside down- I carefully held the bucket between my knees and filled the rest of the bucket with soil.
The finished project hanging with about 6 feet of clearance below for great tomato growing.

I think Mom is a bit suspicious whether this will work or not- but I am optimistic. And otherwise- I still have another 5 tomato plants to pay attention to this summer.

The view from the back deck. I could in theory plant a small herb plant on top of this bucket- maybe something that doesn’t need too much root space?
