Oh Hai. I’m back.
We got off the ship this morning and just flew back from Houston. James has to go into to work in the morning (mandatory overtime) so I’ll be doing laundry, dealing with photos, planting the garden, loving the beagles, and hopefully a bit of sun worship to round out my vacation before I go back to work on Tuesday.
More photos to come in the next few days- but here are a few:

Last weekend we went to DC with my cousin. He flew up from Florida for the weekend so we took him to see the sights.
I had completely forgotten how much I wanted to see the National Museum of African Art exhibit The Art of Being Tuareg.
It was really beautiful- we only had about an hour while they were at the Air and Space Museum but it is a small museum and so we made haste. Actually- the photo that they used in the promotions drew me in more than anything. I actually wish there was more photography and less jewelry. They had a bit of fabric and leather work and a good amount of sculpture. I made J stand in front of the front of the exhibit for no reason.

And then he took a photo of me.

H, I took this photo for you, I thought you might like this piece.

knitting update:
On our trip to Gettysburg this weekend I finished up Sock No2 of my red eyelet socks. Last time we visited Gettysburg I was working on this sock and I finally finished it. I still can’t find No1, though I have photographic proof that it exists.
Here I am almost finished. Hard to knit with a dog on your lap!

I finished this hat for my nephew- I posed before but I finally added the poofball to the top.
It fits a three year old a bit better than it fits James.

And I am currently working on a huge big black boring pair of socks for James- but it is exactly what he wants.

We spent Sunday at Gettysburg, a famous Civil War battlefield about an hour and a half from our house. Yesterday’s photo was Lincoln- and today’s is the flip side of that war- General Robert E Lee on the Virginia Memorial.

We spent a few hours driving around the Battlefield- listening to the audio/driving tour tapes we bought at the visitor’s center. The last time we went we had James’ dad, the resident Civil War expert, with us so we had our own audio tour. It was too cold to get out and walk much- but we took lots of photos.
And guess who came with us and peed on some cannonballs:

from Wiki:
The Battle of Gettysburg
(July 1 – July 3, 1863), fought in, and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as part of the Gettysburg Campaign, was the battle with the largest number of casualties in the American Civil War[3] and is frequently cited as the war’s turning point.[4] Union Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade’s Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee’s invasion of the North.
We found out the other day that we aren’t going to Egypt for work followed by a secondary week long birthday vacation with James in Egypt. So we needed to quickly rustle up a new trip.
Requirements were that we could use our mileage credit to get there, that it would be warm, ideally near water, and not crazy expensive. I had my heart set on a week in Mexico on the beach- maybe even getting our diving certification so we would be ready for going on the Gail and Egan wedding cruise in May.
When I got home last night James and I looked at all our options and decided that we would go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. We got an invite a few days ago for some floor space and James is worried about missing more than one day of school- we we are going down for 5 days to celebrate Mardi Gras, eat my favorite food, go to my favorite bars, and hang out with my favorite people!!
On Thursday the 31st we are going to have a little party type/happy hour thing here in Baltimore and then head to New Orleans for the weekend. Perfect Birthday Trip!
I had a query from mom for birthday ideas and so in anticipation of more queries- I will just go ahead and give the rest of you a clue on the only thing that I really want for my birthday. I’ll give you a photo hint…. you can click on each of them for a better idea…
Does that help?
Sock yarn, y’all! If you’re really ambitious- buy me some yarn and I’ll knit you some socks too!

Been on the road for three hours and two vicodin and one Benedryl for Daisy. Driving into West Virginia now and listening to Dan Savage podcasts. What are you doing today?

Do we look as tired as we feel? And when did I get Paris Hilton’s wonky eye?

James opened his Christmas present last night, a joint effort from me and his parents.

Lookit at the scruffy!

Yesterday we spent the day cooking and relaxing, though James did go for a 45 min run. I sat and thought about him running.Holiday Bacon Appetizers from The Pioneer Woman Cooks

Ours didn’t turn out so well- I may have overcooked them and we were a little short on bacon. I’m going to try again though.

James made some awesome chili for Christmas Eve Dinner! Perfect.I however, started working on Tiramisu for my sister in law- even with homemade ladyfingers. The recipe was based on this one from The Pioneer Woman Cooks and the cake recipe came from Emeril.

A great thing about seeing the movie last night also was that now James wants a camel. Actually, he said he wants 6 camels.
I suggested if/when we are in Cairo in January we might find something where we could go riding camels and camping for a few days in the desert. He agreed.
I don’t care too much about the pyramids, I’m much more interested in the modern history of Cairo and the desert.
Also- I found a local rugby team that is looking for new members. For him, not me. He wants to learn to play and he’s totally fit and 6′5 and scary looking- so he’s going to email them today about practice.
